The Death of Torchwood?

There is a rumbling, grumbling rage of upset in the Austin Dr Who/Torchwood fan base tonight.

With the close of this season's offering, "Torchwood: Children of Earth" the fans are screaming their grief to all and sundry, proclaiming to anyone who will listen that they will not be back for the pending series 4 release.

Why all the hub bub, you ask?

In Series 2 the devoted fans saw the death of two, not one, but two of the core cast. Speaking in one of the special feaure clips on the Series two DVD set, Russell T. Davies asserts that the decision to terminate Owen and Tosh was to off-set Torchwood leader, Jack Harkness' immortality and show his vulnerability. Perhaps someone should have put up a bill board letting the creator know that his message as clear. Maybe then the fans, still reeling from the tragic deaths of Tosh Santo and Owen Harper, would not have been treated to another devastating team massacre with the current series. In this five episode epic, the fans have a justified feeling of betrayal with the death of Ianto Jones.

And what of the dashing rake, Captain Jack Harness? Is it possible this flamboyant, conman time-agent turned world crusader has really run away with his tail tucked under his flapping greatcoat?

This turn of events has fans screaming for blood. Russell T. Davies blood to be specific. Many grieving fans have declared that they will not be tuning in for Season 4. Only time will tell if they do return

  1. RTD has shown and said before that he doesn't like fans. He does the opposite of what fans want. Fans wanted a Jack/Ianto show, he wanted a Gwen Cooper show.

If there is a series 4, I won't be watching. In fact, I'm in the process of forgetting there ever was a series 3.

  2. Well, this has garnered a lot of talk about the show. Talk about advertising! However, I'm a spoiler-whore and spoiled myself (it was difficult not to when this is all anyone is talking about!)... and, now? I don't want to watch series 3. Living in denial is a great thing. How the hell could he kill off Ianto? I'm seriously upset by all this and I haven't even seen it yet!

  3. If this was just a one off it would have been very good but it wasn't. Maybe he thought there would not be a season 4 so decided to go out with a bang.

Ianto Jones became one of the most popular characters even though we did not see him in season one. They didn't even give the Janto fans a chance to see Jack tell Ianto he loved him at the very end.

I am, like many others upset and annoyed by this and will go back to my world of fanfiction and try (as I am not a great writer) to create the characters and the relaionship as we believe it should have been

  5. While I haven't seen the series yet, I did accidentally spoil myself and what with everyone is saying I'm not even sure I want to watch it. Beyond the fact that I found Ianto to be the most interesting character on the show, I honestly feel that RTD just wanted it to end and has painted himself into a corner so he can let it go if he wants to.

Even if there is the possibility of a series 4 (which I'm not sure of since DW and Torchwood will be moving to BBC 1, which is a more 'family friendly' network (or so I'm lead to believe)), I doubt it will be the Torchwood we know and love. I don't even think the same characters will come back, especially when considering that Even Myles just landed herself a role in another BBC drama.

I don't know. I'm heartily disappointed if this is it. Even if all the characters were to have "walked away" at the end instead of Ianto dying, Gwen going on baby leave or whatever, and Jack essentially running away, it would have been better. I'm not expecting hardcore fanservice or anything but I expected something different, something a little more inline with Torchwood and not, you know, death, mayhem and it's over.
